Jamaica’s connection to JFK
JFK airport transportation from Jamaica gives you several ways to continue your trip: the AirTrain, subway, Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) and licensed taxis. The airport’s AirTrain links passenger terminals with Jamaica and Howard Beach stations, as well as parking areas, public transit connections, the hotel-shuttle area and the rental-car center.
JFK is about an 11-minute drive from Airport Plaza Hotel JFK Airport, and Jamaica’s transit stations are about a four-minute walk away. That puts the Jamaica connections within easy reach if you’re choosing between the AirTrain and a road transfer.
For a closer look at changing trains and using the local network, see this guide to Jamaica’s subway and transit connections.

AirTrain and subway connections
The AirTrain is the link between JFK’s terminals and Jamaica station. At Jamaica, you can transfer to the E train at Sutphin Boulevard–Archer Avenue–JFK Airport station. The E runs between Jamaica Center–Parsons/Archer and World Trade Center at all times, according to the MTA schedule.
AirTrain to Jamaica and the E train
A single AirTrain ride to or from Jamaica costs $8.75, and children under 5 ride free. You pay when entering or exiting the AirTrain station at Jamaica or Howard Beach. The subway fare is separate and is listed as $3.00.
You can pay for AirTrain with a contactless credit or debit card, Apple Pay, Google Pay or an OMNY card. Subway fares can be paid with a contactless card, smartphone, wearable device or OMNY card. OMNY cards are available to buy or refill at ticket vending machines in the Jamaica or Howard Beach subway stations.
The airport also lists an OMNY rolling 30-day AirTrain fare cap of $43.50. Eligible rides cost $8.75 each until the cap is reached; additional eligible rides are then free for the rest of the 30-day period.
For group travel, the first rider pays $8.75 and each additional rider pays $4.50, up to five riders and a maximum total of $26.75. Everyone must tap within five minutes, and the payment method cannot be used again for 15 minutes after use.
AirTrain trips between JFK passenger terminals are free. The airport says they take under 10 minutes, with trains running every 5–15 minutes, subject to service changes.
AirTrain to Jamaica and the LIRR
At Jamaica, you can also transfer between the AirTrain and LIRR. This gives you another rail connection from the airport, but the fare and schedule depend on your destination and time of day.
You can buy LIRR tickets at the station, from a vending machine or ticketing desk, or in the TrainTime app. The MTA directs riders to TrainTime for current train information and ticket purchases.
All AirTrain trains and stations are ADA-compliant, with elevators, escalators and wheelchair spaces on each train. The airport also says accessible subway connections are available at Jamaica and Howard Beach.

Taxi and other road transfers
Licensed taxis are available outside each JFK terminal. The airport directs passengers to use official taxi stands or ask for help at a Port Authority Welcome Center in the arrivals area. If you’re at Terminal 5, its taxi stand is on the ground floor of the parking garage, near the AirTrain station.
Yellow taxi
NYC311 says yellow taxis may pick up passengers at JFK. A taxi meter must start at $3.00, except on the $70 flat-fare trips between JFK and Manhattan. A trip to another New York City destination, including a trip to Jamaica, uses the standard metered fare rather than the Manhattan–JFK flat fare.
NYC311 lists a $2 airport access fee for yellow-taxi pickups at JFK and a 50-cent MTA State Surcharge for trips ending in New York City or specified surrounding counties, including Nassau and Suffolk.
For the Manhattan flat fare, it lists a $70 fare, a $1 improvement surcharge and a 50-cent MTA State Surcharge. A $5 rush-hour surcharge applies from 4 PM to 8 PM on weekdays except holidays. Applicable congestion surcharges, tolls and tips may also add to the total.
Green taxi
Green taxis may make prearranged trips to JFK, but NYC311 says you cannot hail one at the airport. If you’re arranging a pickup, make that arrangement before relying on a green taxi for the airport trip.
Choosing a route for your arrival time
For a rail journey, take the AirTrain to Jamaica, then transfer to the E train or LIRR according to your destination. The subway fare is separate from the AirTrain fare; LIRR fares vary with the destination and time of day. If your plan depends on a particular train, check the current schedule and fare details before you set off.
For a door-to-door road transfer, use an official taxi stand at the terminal. A yellow taxi can pick up at JFK, while a green taxi requires a prearranged trip. A standard metered fare applies for destinations outside Manhattan, so the Manhattan flat fare does not apply to a ride to Queens.
For trips between terminals, the AirTrain is free and the airport gives a journey time of under 10 minutes. Build your decision around the transfer you need next: Jamaica is the connection for the E train and LIRR, while Howard Beach is the other AirTrain station with a subway connection.
What to check before you travel
Fares, payment options, schedules and service can change. Check the official site before you go: use the JFK airport site for AirTrain and taxi information, the MTA for subway and LIRR details, and NYC311 for taxi rules and charges.
